11/27/00 Waterbury Fire Department Blood Drive
The Waterbury Fire Department is sponsoring a blood drive Saturday, December 28, 2001, 9AM-1:45PM at Kennedy High
School. Anyone able to donate please call the Truck 3 officer or 1-800-GIVE LIFE to schedule an appointment.

A day before Thanksgiving we followed a column of smoke from the highway overpass - looked like a structure fire - turned

11/24/01 FireFighter Needs Assistance
The Hamden, CT FireFighters will be holding a Benefit Dinner for the family of Hamden FireFighter Gary Merwede. Gary's
wife passed away recently after succumbing to cancer. She leaves behind two small children. The intent is to help Gary
with the enormous medical bills left and give the children a great Christmas. The dinner will be held Wednesday, December
5, 2001, 7-12PM, at the Hamden Elks.
Tickets are $20 and are available at the door. Anyone with cash, raffle gifts or
contributions can call Hamden FireFighter Dave Beaton at (203) 932-9501, for any contribution great or small. You can

11/22/01 Photo Galleries Updated
WKSS 95.7, a local radio station, selected Station 11 of the Waterbury Fire Department as their 'Hometown Heroes'. Listeners
from all over Connecticut nominated their local fire departments. Station 11 was selected from an email sent by a child who
said his grandpa was a chief in Waterbury. The radio personalities, volunteers, and former UCONN basketball star Kara
Wolters, delivered a thanksgiving dinner to the guys on Ravioli Ridge. A photo was added to the

11/21/01 Line of Duty Death - Cameron, WV
Our condolences to the White family and the Cameron, West Virginia Volunteer Fire Department. FireFighter Clifford White Jr,
21, a 2 year veteran with the Cameron Volunteer Fire Department, died Monday, November 19, 2001. Clifford was a
passenger in a tanker truck that left the roadway, overturned onto its roof, and slid 50 feet down a steep hill. The tanker was
filled with 2,000 gallons of water and separated from the chassis during the crash. Clifford and the driver, who had to be
airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries, were responding mutual aid to a brush fire in a nearby county.

A structure fire in a third floor apartment on Willow Street in Waterbury was extinguished in about 20 minutes Sunday night.
The third floor and roof suffered heavy damage, but no one was injured in the blaze. A photo was added to the

11/16/01 Line of Duty Death - Mine Hill, NJ
Our condolences to the Danielson family and the Mine Hill, New Jersey Volunteer Fire Department. FireFighter George
Danielson, 77, a veteran with the Mine Hill Volunteer Fire Department died Friday, November 9, 2001. George was directing
traffic in front of the fire station on Friday, September 14, 2001 as companies were returning from the scene of a chimney
fire when he was struck by a private vehicle and sustained multiple injuries. He was transported to the hospital for treatment
where he remained until he passed away as a result of his injuries.

11/14/01 Line of Duty Death - TN Department of Forestry
Our condolences to the Strode family and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry. FireFighter Harold
Strode, 46, a 3 year veteran of the Tennessee Forestry Division, died Saturday, November 10, 2001. Harold and five other
members of his crew were overcome by a firestorm in the densely wooded and steep terrain of the Upper Cumberland region
of Tennessee. The five other members of his crew were able to cross the fireline to safety, but Harold was overtaken by the
firestorm.

11/12/01 FDNY Christmas Gift 2001
The Spartanburg County Fire Deparments of South Carolina have organized a fundraiser on a 134 year old promise to the
FDNY. The money donated will benefit the injured and fallen FDNY brothers of the terrorist attacks. Please take a moment

11/10/01 Memorial Services for Brian Sweeney
FireFighter Brian Sweeney was a member of the Waterbury Fire Department for a very short time before answering the call
to join F.D.N.Y. Brian was a member of Rescue 1 and on duty September 11, 2001. He is still listed as missing. There will be a
Memorial Visitation held on Tuesday, November 27, 2-5PM and 7-9:30PM at the Empire Hose Company, across from Cure of
Ars Church, 2323 Merrick Avenue, Merrick, NY. There will be a Memorial Mass the following day, Wednesday, November 28,
2001, 11AM at the Cure of Ars Church. A bus is being arranged and I will post a contact person as soon as more information
becomes available.
11/8/01 FDNY Memorial Service Postponed
Due to several factors, the parties involved in the November 18 memorial for our fallen brothers in New York who died on
9-11, has been postponed to an undetermined date. Don't cancel your plans to visit New York just yet. There will still be
individual memorial services to attend the weekend of November 16-19. Please visit FDNY's website for the
funeral schedule.
11/7/01 West Virginia Fire Station Lost in Fire
Captain Danny Swiger, of the Summit Park VFD, of Clarksburg, West Virginia, sent me an email to post. Early on the
morning of November 1, 2001, Company 13 of the Summit Park VFD lost their station, equipment, and all items that
aided in running the fire department. Company 13 served Despard, Summit Park, Glen Falls, and Arlington communities
for the past 30 years. In one tragic night of fire, this company lost everything.

11/6/01 Line of Duty Death - Sugar Camp, WI
Our condolences to the Dart family and the Sugar Camp, Wisconsin Volunteer Fire Department. Senior FireFighter Dennis
Dart, 62, a founding member of the Sugar Camp Fire Department died Friday, November 2, 2001. Dennis was operating
at a motor vehicle fire when he suffered a heart attack and died.

11/5/01 Guns n Hoses Benefit Hockey Challenge
Stephen Doyle, the Secretary of the FDNY Hockey Team has informed me that they will be having a 'Guns n Hoses Benefit
Hockey Challenge' to benefit the New York City PBA & UFA Widows and Children's Funds. The event will be held Saturday,
December 1, 2001 at the Boston Fleet Center, gates open at 1:00PM and the first game starts at 2:00PM. Game 1 will be
the Boston Police Department versus the New York Police Department, Game 2 will be New York City Fire Department
versus the Boston Fire Department, with an on-ice ceremony intermission between games.
General admission is $10.00. Tickets will be available as of November 7, 2001, at Florian Hall, Boston Fleet Center, and
Ticket Masters in Boston and New York. The event is being sponsored by 96.9FM Talk Radio WTKK Boston, the Boston Fleet
Center, and the Boston Fire and Police Department Hockey Teams. For more information visit

The Waterbury Fire Department christmas party will be held Friday, November 30, 2001 at the Marriott Hotel in Waterbury

11/2/01 Attention WFD Members
There will be two Special Informational meetings concerning contract negotiations on Saturday, November 3, 2001 at 1500
hours and 1800 hours in the Elton Ballroom.
Please make every effort to attend. A ratification vote may follow on Monday, November 5, 2001 from 1500 hours till
1900 hours in the Elton Ballroom.
