6/25/02 Line of Duty Death - Grayback Forestry Inc.
Our condolences to the Shirley, Rama, Martindale, and Zigich families and the United States Forest Service and Grayback
Forestry. FireFighters Retha Shirley, 19, of Baker City, Oregon, Daniel Rama, 28, of Baker City, Oregon, Jake Martindale, 20,
of Boise, Idaho, and Zachary Zigich, 19, of Twin Falls, Idaho, employees of Grayback Forestry Inc. of La Grande, Oregon
were killed enroute to the 2 week old Hayman, Colorado wildfire on Friday June 21, 2002. The driver of their vehicle, Megan
Helm, 21, of La Grande, lost control of their van veering left into the median, overcorrecting, and rolling the van 3 times in
the road and once more in the grass on the right side of the highway. The van was carrying 11 firefighters and was 1 of 8
vans in the caravan that had just stopped in Parachute, Colorado for food and fuel. Four other passengers were treated for
minor to serious injuries in Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, and Rifle. One of the injured firefighters, Bartholomew Bailey,
20, of Corvallis, Oregon, was in critical condition for 3 days after the crash before he succumbed to his injuries on Monday
June 24, 2002.

6/23/02 Chief of Department Dies - Meriden, CT
Our condolences to the Dunn family and the Meriden Fire Department of Connecticut. Chief of Department William Dunn,
50, a 25 year veteran of the Meriden Fire Department died Thursday June 20, 2002. William took his own life at his home
3 weeks after taking a leave of absence for physical and emotional exhaustion. Friends and family were shocked by the
death of a man widely respected and considered a dynamic chief and the department's youngest in history and the pride
of a firefighting family.

6/22/02 Photo Gallery Updates
Battalion Chief Ralph Leone was able to take some photos while companies were extricating a driver from his Ford Aspire on
Tuesday evening. I posted some pics I took at the scene after the victim was transported. Ralph was able to catch a couple

6/20/02 Line of Duty Death - Walker, CA
Our condolences to the Davis, Labare, and Wass families and the U.S. Forest Service of California. Engineer Michael Harlow,
59, Co-Pilot Craig Labare, 36, and Pilot Steven Wass, 42, died Monday June 17, 2002. Their C-130 air tanker broke apart in
midair and crashed in flames while dropping fire retardant on an 8,000 acre wildfire near Yosemite National Park close to the
town of Walker in Mono County California.

Engine 11, Truck 1, Battalion 1, and Rescue 9 responded to a car versus telephone pole extrication Monday night. Single
occupant (driver) entrapped. Heavy damage to the front of the small Ford Aspire. We took the roof and rolled the

6/18/02 Walsh Prints.com
A website was brought to my attention that I would like to share. Jason Calabrese approached me when Paul Walsh, a New
Britain FireFighter and artist, donated 5 prints to be raffled off at the benefit yesterday for injured Waterbury FireFighter John
Izzi. I was unable to attend the event but Jason said that a lot of guys were interested in purchasing prints. Here are two
samples 'Opening Up' and 'Devils Stairway', and a link to

6/17/02 Photo Gallery Update
Christian Lewalter of the Graevenwiesbach Fire Station in Germany has sent me a couple more photos. One is of himself in
full turnout 'German' turnout. I'm not exactly sure what brand bunkers they are. And there is another photo of a 1944 Dodge
all wheel drive that was taken out of service in the 1990's and was used as a limousine recently at a wedding for a

6/16/02 Line of Duty Death - Indianapolis, IN
Our condolences to the Jolliff family and the Indianapolis Fire Department of Indiana. FireFighter Paramedic Paul Jolliff, 37, a
7 year veteran of the Indianapolis Fire Department Station 10 died Friday June 14, 2002. Paul was on his 22nd and final
practice mission before being certified as a department dive team member. The dive took place with students from several
area departments at a private 10-acre murky pond with 70 foot depths. Rescuers were called when Paul couldn't be found.
Officials suspect he drowned after he panicked when he was unable to surface. His body was recovered 2 hours later.
He was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital.

6/15/02 Line of Duty Death - Herring, NC
Our condolences to the Autry family and the Herring Volunteer Fire Department of North Carolina. Medic Bridgett Autry, 18,
a 2 year veteran of the Herring Volunteer Fire Department died Thursday June 13, 2002. Bridgett was responding to a call
from the fire station when she lost control and rolled her 1993 Chevy Blazer. Bridgett was ejected in the rollover. She was
rushed to Sampson County Regional Medical Center in Clinton and pronounced dead.

Waterbury Fire Department Assistant Chief James Trainor visited the Seagrave factory in Wisconsin and took quite a few
photos. I whittled his 100+ photos down to 53. They show several apparatus in different states of assembly, including some

6/13/02 Line of Duty Death - Brown Township, IN
Our condolences to the Stinson family and the Brown Township Fire Department of Indiana. FireFighter Terry Stinson, 44, a
5 year veteran of the Brown Township Fire Department died Friday June 7, 2002. Terry suffered a heart attack after
returning from a medical assist on Monday May 27, 2002. He received immediate medical attention from his brother
firefighters and remained on advanced life support at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He never regained consciousness and
was taken off of life support on June 1 and died several days later.

6/11/02 Line of Duty Death - Oviedo, FL
Our condolences to the Kelly family and the Oviedo Fire Department of Florida. FireFighter Shane Kelly, 26, a 3 year veteran
of the Oviedo Fire Department died Saturday June 8, 2002. Shane was rendering assistance to trapped victims in an
overturned vehicle with six other people at the scene of an accident on the Florida Turnpike when a tractor trailer crashed
into the rescuers killing Shane and an Orlando doctor. Four other people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

6/10/02 Relay for Life Photo Gallery
Truck 1, Engine 10, and Engine 8 attended the Waterbury 2002 Relay for Life Cancer Fundraiser on Saturday June 8, 2002.
4 of WFD's bravest (pictured L-R) FF Jeff Trota, Lt Robert Trerice, FF JP Dias, and Lt Todd Collitti are all cancer survivors and
were in attendance. Money was raised for the American Cancer Society and the soon to be open Harold Leever Research
Center in Waterbury. 10 photos were added to the

6/8/02 Attention WFD Members
The regular meeting of Local 1339 for June will be held Thursday June 13, 2002 1900 hours at the Union Offices/Elton Hotel.
Voting for Officers, Executive Board Members, and Delegates will be held at the Union Offices on the same day between the
hours of 1500 and 1900.
On another note, John Izzi's family has asked that visitation be suspended until John has recovered more. The family would
also like to thank everyone for their support.

6/5/02 Line of Duty Death - Sycuan, CA
Our condolences to the Broussard family and the Sycuan Fire Department of California. FireFighter Robert Broussard, 59, a
5 year veteran of the Sycuan Fire Department serving the Sycuan Reservation and San Diego County, died Friday May 31,
2002. Robert was performing the annual pack test for wildland firefighting certification when he collapsed. Medics on standby
responded immediately and Robert was airlifted to Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa where was pronounced dead.

6/4/02 Line of Duty Death - Columbus, MS
Our condolences to the Allbritton family and the Columbus Fire Department of Mississippi. Engineer Gerald Allbritton, 45, an
18 year veteran of the Columbus Fire Department died Wednesday May 29, 2002. Gerald had returned to his bunk at
station 4 after an ems run at about 2AM. The following morning his brother firefighters were unable to wake him. The
cause of death is believed to be heart failure.

6/1/02 Attention WFD Members
Jason informed me that John is out of intensive care and in a regular room. He is responding to his name and various
questions even though his throat is still recovering from the ventilator tube. As long as John is in stable condition, they are
planning on flying him to a local hospital on Tuesday.
