12/22/02 Photo Gallery Update
Christian LeWalter of the Graevenwiesbach Fire Station of Germany sent me 4 more photos to
add to his gallery. Photos are of a structure fire 12/12 in Germany. House was on a narrow road
and the temperature was -10 Celcius (about 14 Fahrenheit). It took 12 hours for 140 firefighters

12/20/02 Line of Duty Death - Tellico Plains, TN
Our condolences to the Harris family and the Mount Vernon Volunteer Fire Department of
Tellico Plains, Tennessee. FireFighter Dennis Harris, 43, a 10 year veteran of the Mount
Vernon Volunteer Fire Department died Thursday December 5, 2002. Dennis was
operating a pumper at a structure fire when he when he went into cardiac arrest and died.

12/19/02 Line of Duty Death - Ranger, TX
Our condolences to the Espinoza family and the Ranger Fire Department of Texas. FireFighter/EMT Shaun Espinoza,
29, a rookie firefighter with the Ranger Fire Department who had just completed his probation, died Friday December
13, 2002. Shaun suffered an apparent massive heart attack while attending his EMT training class. His brother
classmates and emergency personnel were unable to save him.

12/18/02 Line of Duty Death - Mechanicsville, MD
Our condolences to the Mangum family and the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department of Maryland. FireFighter/EMT
Justin Mangum, 20, a 3 year veteran of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department died Monday December 16, 2002.
Justin was responding to a motor vehicle extrication call in his personal vehicle when he was involved in a one vehicle
accident at 4:30 AM. EMS was first on the scene of the accident and pronounced him. A neighboring fire department
responded to the scene to extract him from the vehicle.

12/17/02 Line of Duty Death - Boyd, MN
Our condolences to the Lanphear family and the Boyd Volunteer Fire Department of Minnesota.
FireFighter Jonathan Lanphear, 23, a volunteer with the Boyd Volunteer Fire Department died
Thursday December 12, 2002. Jonathan was responding to a fire call when his vehicle rolled
over in a one car accident at the intersection of Chippewa County Road 7 and Chippewa
County Road 15. Jonathan was trapped under the vehicle in a ditch and pronounced dead at
the scene.

12/9/02 Line of Duty Death - Heidelburg, PA
Our condolences to the Wissel family and the Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department of Pennsylvania.
Fire Chief Henry Wissel, 55, a veteran of the Heidelburg Volunteer Fire Department died Saturday
December 7, 2002. Henry suffered an apparent heart attack at an eight alarm structure fire at L.
Thomas Towing, a half-block long building in Heidelberg, a southwest suburb of Pittsburgh. He was
pulling equipment from an apparatus when he collapsed. He was transported by Scott Township
EMS to Saint Clair Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

12/7/02 Line of Duty Death - Dallas, TX
Our condolences to the DePauw family and the Dallas Fire Department of Texas. Captain Michael DePauw, 51, a
30 year veteran of the Dallas Fire Department died Thursday December 5, 2002. Michael was operating on the
second floor of a large two story structure fire when he collapsed after an apparent heart attack. He was
transported to Medical City Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

12/6/02 Line of Duty Death - Fort Rucker, AL
Our condolences to the Neis family and the United States Army Fire and Emergency Services. FireFighter Kerry
Neis, 31, of Enterprise, Alabama, a Department of the Army Civilian FireFighter assigned to Fort Rucker in
Alabama died Wednesday December 4, 2002. Kerry was killed during an aircraft fire training exercise when
the aircraft firefighting pumper they were operating in front of apparently slipped into gear, rolling over Kerry
and another firefighter. The other firefighter was treated and released from Flowers Hospital. The accident is
under investigation.
