12/29/06 Attention WFD Members

Waterbury FireFighter Brian Barnosky, who was severely injured in an off-duty one car mva, was able to return home from the hospital after ten days on Wednesday. I spoke to Brian yesterday and he said he was 'home but not better'. He is still in a hospital bed and will be receiving home therapy until he is ambulatory. Brian faces many months of recovery and a 'free list' is in the works. More information when it is released.

12/26/06 Shield Gallery Update

Today I updated the Shield Gallery with 5 new helmet shields. The one on the left is one of three submissions from Rob Melotto of the Livermore Falls Fire Department of Maine. The one on the right is from my close friend Elac Aviles of the Waterbury Fire Department, whom I spent many of my best years on the job with on Truck 1. Elac is now assigned to Engine 1 at Northside Station.

These new helmet shields can be found on pages Shield 5 and Shield 6. There are only 61 shields in this gallery, so please take a photo of your helmet shield, email it to me, and I will gladly add it to my gallery.

12/20/06 New FireFighting Videos

Waterbury Fire Captain Bob Stoeckert brought the first of these videos to my attention and the other I found on YouTube. Both videos show the hazards of our chosen profession, and how quickly things can go wrong. Always watch for the telltale signs of a backdraft and always wear your personal protective equipment.

12/18/06 Attention WFD Members

I was able to visit Waterbury FireFighter Brian Barnosky at Waterbury Hospital the day after his accident. They are medicating him, but you can see he is still in alot of pain. Due to the volume of visitors, the hospital has moved him to a larger one-patient room. His brother Steven calls it the 'high-rollers suite'. Brian's recovery is going to be a long one, so a 'free list' is going to be established as soon as he runs out of sick time. I will post more details when this list comes about.

I have been getting alot of requests for my printable calendars for the Waterbury Fire Department. Please visit the WFD Schedule page for links to the Printable Calendars. I have created a color version with all 3 shifts, a black & white version with all 3 shifts, and individually highlighted A, B, and C Shift black & white calendars.

12/16/06 Attention WFD Members

This morning Waterbury FireFighter Brian Barnosky was involved in a one car mva near his home in Watertown. He hit some black ice while bringing his 6-year old son to hockey practice. The truck rolled over and down an embankment. Brian was ejected and broke his leg, his clavicle, bruised his lungs, and has hairline fractures in his back. He is recovering from his injuries at Waterbury Hospital. His son was not injured in the crash.

A retirement party will be held for Waterbury Fire Driver Davis Calderon on Friday February 2, 2006 6-10PM at The Hills restaurant in Waterbury. Contact Station 11 for tickets.

12/8/06 New FireFighting Video

I found an interesting video online that shows one of the dangers associated with car fires. At first, this looks like a no big deal car fire, but wait until the nozzleman hits the steering column and causes a magnesium explosion.
