4/28/08 Attention WFD Members

     I was approached by a member of the Waterbury Fireman's Aid Assoc. to help create the monthly layout for the 2009 calendar. The top half of the calendar includes photos of the WFD in action, while the bottom half is the monthly layout. I have included the 3 shift work schedule, 4 shift work schedule, kelly days and kelly groups, as well as color coordinating the 3 shifts and indicating holidays. 4/22/08 Line of Duty Death - Springfield, LA

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Terrebonne family and the Springfield Fire & Rescue Department of Louisiana. FireFighter Riley Terrebonne, 29, a veteran of the Springfield Fire & Rescue Department, died Monday April 21, 2008. Riley was off duty when he approached a motor vehicle accident in Tangipahoa Parish. He stopped his vehicle and began to care for the victim when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle and pinned against a guardrail. He was transported to North Oaks Hospital where he was stabilized and transferred to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge where he succumbed to his injuries the next day.

4/21/08 Attention WFD Members

     It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of John Dwyer, son of Waterbury FireFighter Vincent Dwyer. A visitation for John will be held on Monday April 21, 2008 5-8PM at Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home. A funeral mass for John will be held on Tuesday April 22, 2008 11AM at Saints Peter and Paul Church followed by a burial in Calvary Cemetery.


4/20/08 Attention WFD Members

     It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Thomas Unwin, father-in-law of Waterbury Battalion Chief Rick Hart. A visitation for Thomas will be held on Sunday April 20, 2008 4-7PM at Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home. A funeral mass for Thomas will be held on Monday April 21, 2008 9:30AM at St. Francis Xavier Church followed by a burial in Old St. Joseph's Cemetery.


4/19/08 Line of Duty Death - Sedalia, MO

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Morris family and the Sedalia Fire Department of Missouri. FireFighter Rick Morris, 54, a 33 year veteran of the Sedalia Fire Department, died Thursday April 17, 2008. Rick suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to 50% of his body during a flashover at a residential structure fire on Tuesday April 8th. He was transported by helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia where he was in critical condition until he succumbed to his injuries a week later.

4/18/08 Line of Duty Death - Colorado State Forest Service

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Marais family, Aero Applicators Inc., and the Colorado State Forest Service. Pilot Gert Marais, 42, flying for Aero Applicators Inc. under contact with the Colorado State Forest Service, died Tuesday April 15, 2008. Gert was killed when his single engine air tanker crashed after dropping fire retardant on the Fort Carson Wildfire.

4/17/08 Line of Duty Death - Olney Springs, CO

Line of Duty Death

     Our condolences to the DeVore family, the Schwartz family, and the Olney Springs Volunteer Fire Department of Colorado. Fire Chief Terry DeVore, 30, a 10 year veteran of the Olney Springs Volunteer Fire Department and FireFighter John Schwartz, 38, a volunteer since December, died Tuesday April 15, 2008. Terry and John were responding to the Ordway Wildfire when a bridge over a drainage ditch they were crossing collapsed or was already collapsed due to fire damage. The approach to the bridge was obstructed by smoke and blowing dust.

4/16/08 Armpatch Gallery Updates

     Today I updated the Armpatch Gallery with 24 new armpatches, including these from Boaz Fire and Rescue of Alabama, and the Riley Fire Department of Kansas.

     These new armpatches can be found on pages Armpatch 222 and Armpatch 223. There are now 2,676 armpatches in the gallery.


4/15/08 Line of Duty Death - Macon, MS

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Fraley family and the Macon Fire Department of Mississippi. Fire Chief Charlie Fraley, 65, a 50 year veteran of the Macon Fire Department, died Saturday April 12, 2008. Charlie was operating at a structure fire at the Noxubee Votech Center when he became ill and had shortness of breath. He was transported to Noxubee Medical Center where he passed away shortly after.

4/11/08 Line of Duty Death - Roanoke-Wildwood, NC

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Michl family and the Roanoke-Wildwood Volunteer Fire Department of Littleton, North Carolina. FireFighter Walter Michl, 76, a veteran of the Roanoke-Wildwood Volunteer Fire Department, died Sunday March 16, 2008. Walter was dispatched from his home by pager for a reported structure fire. His wife discovered him shortly thereafter having passed away in the kitchen of his residence from an apparent heart attack.

4/10/08 Line of Duty Death - Lawrence Township, PA

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Crotty family, the Lawrence Park Township Fire Department, and the Erie Fire Department of Pennsylvania. Deputy Chief Michael Crotty, 24, a 6 year volunteer of the Lawrence Township Fire Department and Probationary FireFighter for the Erie Fire Department, died Tuesday April 8, 2008. Michael was commanding a fire scene at Port Erie Plastics in Harborcreek Township, when a ladder pipe malfunctioned and became seperated from the aerial ladder, striking Michael in the back of the head. He was transported to Hamot Medical Center where he died shortly after.

4/9/08 Attention WFD Members

     It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Alphonse Macharelli. Alphonse was a past Chairman of the Waterbury Board of Fire Commissioners as well as being active in many community, political, civic, and sports clubs. There will be a military graveside service for Alphonse on Thursday April 10, 2008 10AM at Calvary Cemetery. There are no calling hours.


4/8/08 Non-Line of Duty Death - Mount Vernon, OH

     Our condolences to the Knox family and the Mount Vernon Fire Department of Ohio. Retired Former Fire Chief and FireFighter Thomas Knox, 68, a 26 year veteran of the Mount Vernon Fire Department, died Saturday October 20, 2007. Thomas passed away at his home due to complications from surgery.

4/7/08 Attention WFD Members

4/6/08 Attention WFD Members

     I have redesigned the work schedule calendars for the WFD. Since we changed to the Kelly Day 'Groups', I decided to make new calendars. There are 27 calendars now. Nine for each shift, one for each Kelly Day Group. Each calendar will highlight your shift, and also highlight your Kelly Day. Both the 2008 and 2009 calendars have been updated in this format. 4/4/08 Line of Duty Death - Colerain Township, OH

Line of Duty Death

     Our condolences to the Broxterman and Schira families, and the Colerain Township Fire Department of Cinncinati, Ohio. Fire Captain Robin Broxterman, 37, a 17 year veteran of the Colerain Township Fire Department and FireFighter Brian Schira, 29, a 1 year veteran of the Colerain Township Fire Department, died Friday April 4, 2008. Robin and Brian were first due with Engine Company 102 at an early morning residential structure fire. While performing search and rescue they were trapped in the basement after the floor collapsed. Robin and Brian perished before they could be rescued. The occupants of the residence escaped the fire without injury.

4/3/08 Armpatch Gallery Updates

4/1/08 Photo Gallery Update

     I have added yet a 3rd Photo Gallery for Shane Shifflett of the White Sands Missle Range Fire Department of New Mexico.
