5/28/08 Line of Duty Death - Pittsburgh, PA

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Burns family and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire of Pennsylvania. FireFighter Richard Burns, 43, a 9 year veteran of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, died Saturday May 24, 2008. Richard was found deceased in the firehouse by his brother firefighters of Engine Company #12 from a cause still to be determined.

5/27/08 Line of Duty Death - Eaton, IN

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Maddy family and the Eaton Volunteer Fire Department of Indiana. FireFighter Jay Maddy, 41, a 20 year veteran of the Eaton Volunteer Fire Department, died Friday May 23, 2008. The town of Eaton was on high alert after a rash of 21 arson fires in a 24 hours. A town curfew was established and Jay was on fire watch when he suffered chest pains. He was rushed to Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, but passed away from his injuries shortly after. Two suspects, a juvenile and an 18-year-old male, have been arrested in connection with the series of fires.

5/23/08 Line of Duty Death - Aston, PA

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Eusden family and the Aston-Beechwood Volunteer Fire Company of Aston, Pennsylvania. Fire Chief Raymond Eusden, 57, a 41 year life member of the Aston-Beechwood Fire Company, died Tuesday May 20, 2008. Raymond was in the firehouse working on fire apparatus when he became ill, feeling pain and numbness in one of his arms. He then communicated to another member in the station that he was having difficulty speaking, slurring his words. He was transported to Crozer Chester Medical Center and was admitted to the hospital. While recovering in the hospital Raymond went into cardiac arrest and was unable to be revived.

5/16/08 Line of Duty Death - Birmingham, AL

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Mixon family and the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Department of Alabama. Captain/Paramedic Joseph Mixon, 51, a 23 year veteran of the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Department, died Tuesday May 13, 2008. Joseph became ill while on duty Monday May 12th and left work for home. He went to the doctor with upper respiratory type symptoms and after being examined returned to his residence. Later that evening Joseph suffered a cerebrovascular accident and was transported to the hospital where he passed away later that day.

5/14/08 Non-Line of Duty Death - Fredericktown, OH

     Our condolences to the Wilson family and the Fredericktown Community Fire District of Ohio. FireFighter Donald Wilson, 53, a 25 year veteran of the Fredericktown Fire Department, died Sunday May 11, 2008. Don lost his battle with colon cancer and passed away at Knox Community Hospital surrounded by his family.

5/13/08 Line of Duty Death - Racine, MO

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Casey family and the Seneca Area Fire Protection of Missouri. FireFighter Tyler Casey, 21, a volunteer firefighter with the Seneca Area Fire Protection District, died Monday May 12, 2008. Tyler, a trained storm spotter, was storm spotting May 10th on Missouri Highway 43 and Iris Road in Newton County when he left his vehicle to alert a family when an EF-4 tornado struck. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to Joplinís Freeman West Hospital where he was admitted and placed on life support. Two days later he was removed from life support. A total of 14 people were killed by the tornado, with 200 injuries including 90 people sent to the hospital.

5/6/08 Attention WFD Members

     On this Saturday May 3rd, after 14 months, Waterbury FireFighter Joe Bogdanski was officially welcomed home from his second deployment in the Middle East. Joe, his wife Sandy, and daughter Sophie, were lifted in the bucket of Truck 2 to remove the Blue Star Flag that has flown at Northside Fire Station since January 27, 2007. 5/5/08 Armpatch Gallery Update

     Today I updated the Armpatch Gallery with 24 new armpatches, including these from Abu Ghraib Prison Fire Department of Baghdad, Iraq and the Portsmouth Fire Department of Ohio.

     These new armpatches can be found on pages Armpatch 224 and Armpatch 225. There are now 2,700 armpatches in the gallery.


5/1/08 Line of Duty Death - Pine City, MN

Line of Duty Death      Our condolences to the Jylka family and the Pine City Fire Department of Minnesota. FireFighter Jeremy Jylka, 34, a member of the Pine City Fire Department since 2007, died Tuesday April 29, 2008. Jeremy was responding to a grass fire with another firefighter in a department pickup truck when he collapsed and stopped breathing. The driver of the vehicle started CPR and Jeremy was transported to Kanabec Hospital where he was pronounced.
