Our condolences to the Germano family and the Derry Volunteer Fire
Department of Pennsylvania. Assistant Chief Alphonse Germano, 60, a
lifelong volunteer and member of the Derry Volunteer Fire Department
for 18 years, died Saturday December 15, 2007. Alphonse had responded
to an automatic alarm and returned to the firehouse. Another alarm came
in but he stayed behind to finish cooking lunch. Shortly after, he was
found unresponsive on the kitchen floor. CPR was administered and he was
transported to Excela Health Latrobe Hospital where he was pronounced.

Alphonse was also a member of the Greensburg, Blairsville and Bolivar
Fire Departments during his career. He was a local level instructor
and adjunct instructor for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy. He
oversaw many controlled burns statewide designed to train firefighters
in safe and proper techniques to extinguish structural blazes.

Our brother Alphonse leaves behind his wife Carol, and his two sons
Brian and Scott. A visitation for Alphonse will be held on Tuesday
December 18, 2007 7-9PM and Wednesday December 19, 2007 2-4PM & 7-9PM
at Shoemake Funeral Home in Blairsville. A funeral for Alphonse will
be held on Thursday December 20, 2007 10AM at Saints Simon and Jude
