Our condolences to the Powell family and the McLeansville Fire Department of North Carolina. FireFighter Cassandra Powell,
32, a veteran firefighter with time on several departments died Monday September 23, 2002. Cassandra was alone returning
to her assigned station No. 27 from headquarters with equipment. The 1,250 gallon 1975 Ford tanker she was driving left the
roadway, swerved back and overturned in a ditch crushing the cab roof. She received severe head trauma and was
pronounced dead at the scene and her body had to be extricated from the vehicle.
Cassandra had only joined the McLeansville Fire Department as a paid member 5 weeks ago. She had also continued working
part-time with the Eden Fire Department, her home town department, and the Guilford County Fire Department Fire District
13, where her husband is a paid Captain. Previously she also worked for the Summerfield and Colfax Fire Departments.
Our sister Cassandra leaves behind a husband of two months, Joe and two children, a 14 year old daughter and a 12 year
old son. A visitation will be held Wednesday September 24, 2002 7-9PM at Fair's Funeral Home Eden. A funeral will be held
Thursday September 25, 2002 2PM at Osbourne Baptist Church in Eden. Internment will follow at Ridgeview Cemetary.
