Our condolences to the Gilbert family and the Idaho Department of Lands. Doug Gilbert, 52, a firefighter pilot from Visalia, California, was killed Tuesday, July 10, 2001. Doug's single engine air tanker crashed while dropping fire retardant on a 500 acre wildland fire in the north-central Idaho backcountry. Doug had many years experience, and had spent the past two seasons fighting fires in Idaho. The cause of the crash is being investigated.
