Our condolences to the Schwendeman family and the Dunham Township, Ohio Volunteer Fire Department. FireFighter Dustin
Schwendeman, 26, an eight year veteran of the Dunham Township Volunteer Fire Department, died Monday, January 21,
2002. Dustin was responding to a mutual aid structure fire in his personal vehicle when he hit a patch of ice. Dustin was
ejected through the sunroof of his vehicle after it rolled several times. He was transported to a local hospital with
severe head injuries. He was then airlifted to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where he later died.
Dustin was the president of the 20 member department as well as an insurance agent with Schwendeman Insurance Agency,
a family business. He also owned and operated Schwendeman Training Center, giving lessons to youth and amateurs and
training horses for about six years. He started showing horses at an early age and was a national champion.
Calling hours are at Barlow Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6-8PM, Thursday from 2-4PM,
and Friday from 6-8PM. A funeral liturgy with mass at 10:30AM will be held Saturday, January 26 at St. Ambrose Catholic
Church in Porterfield. Burial is in East Lawn Memorial Park. The procession will be led by Dunham Township VFD’s
frontline engine.
