Fallen Brothers» Gerard J. Brown Sr

Our condolences to the Brown Family and the Baldwin, New York Fire Department. The Chief's Office and the Officers and Personnel of Hook and Ladder Company Two of the Baldwin Fire Department regretfully announce the passing of Former Captain, FireFighter Gerard J. Brown Senior, a 49 year veteran. "Pop" Brown was the senior member of Hook and Ladder Company Two with 49 years of service. This being the longest tenure in the Company since it's inception. Jerry joined Hook and Ladder Two in 1953 and served with distinction as a firefighter throughout the fifties.

In 1958 Jerry was awarded the "Legion of Valor Award" the Fire Departments highest honor for the successful rescue of a woman from a burning building. Ex-Captain Browns actions were described as "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty" and his actions were carried out in the finest traditions of the fire service. Jerry was elected to the office of Lieutenant by his fellow firefighters in 1962 then rose to the rank of Captain by 1964. Jerry was described as one of the most active members of the company throughout his career. The seventies brought a continuation of the firefighting Browns tradition when Jerry's oldest son John joined the ranks of Ladder 2. Later in that decade, Jerry Jr. was to be sworn into the ranks of Ladder 2. Then in the eighties brought Jerry's youngest son Bill into the Ladder Company. Jerry, Sr. worked side by side with his sons and brothers from Ladder 2 until recent years. He was the chauffeur and trainer of 4 Ladder Trucks well into the nineties. Jerry remained an active firefighter until his death March 12, 2002. We hold in highest regard his Bravery, Dedication and devotion to duty to the Baldwin Fire Department and the community of Baldwin.

Fire Department service will be held 8PM Thursday evening at the Fullerton Funeral home on Merrick Road in Baldwin. Christian Services and full Firematic honors will be held at the St. Christopher's Church Merrick Road Baldwin on Friday at 10:30AM. Celebration of Jerry's career and life will be at Ladder Two's quarters directly following the Mass. The cremation will be private. The family has asked in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center Foundation.
