Fallen Brothers» Ghent Gas Explosion

Line of Duty Death

Our condolences to the Burroughs and Dorsey families, the Ghent Volunteer Fire Department, and the families of all the victims of the Ghent Gas Explosion. On Tuesday January 30, 2007 two men were working on the two 500 pound propane storage tanks behind the Little General Store in Ghent, West Virginia when the Ghent Volunteer Fire Department responded to an odor of gas at the store. Captain Frederick Burroughs had arrived in his personal vehicle and FireFighter-EMT Craig Dorsey had arrived in a Ghent Ambulance when propane that had accumulated was ignited causing a massive explosion that leveled the store and overturned vehicles. Captain Frederick Burroughs, 51, and FireFighter-EMT Craig Dorsey, 24, and the two propane workers were killed by the blast. Four employees of the store and Ghent Volunteer FireFighter Donnie Caldwell were injured by the explosion.

Fred was active in his community, serving as a high school basketball and football official for 25 years. He was honored as the 2003 West Virginia Official of the Year. Fred had served as the Ghent Fire Chief for 6 years and was currently serving on the Board of Directors.

Our brother Fred leaves behind his wife Hazel, his son Christopher, and his daughter Lindsay. A visitation will be held for Fred on Saturday February 3, 2007 3-8PM at Victory Baptist Academy in Beaver. A funeral will be held for Fred on Sunday February 4, 2007 1PM at Victory Baptist Academy followed by a burial at Calfee Cemetery in Beckley. Donations of sympathy may be made to any the following:
