Our condolences to the Chavis family and the Lexington County, South Carlonia Fire Department. FireFighter Jeff Chavis, 22,
a 4 year veteran with the Lexington County Fire Department died Thursday, July 12, 2001, succumbing to injuries he
received fighting a structure fire on June 16, 2001. Jeff had second and third degree burns to 50% of his body, and he was
receiving treatment at The Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.
Jeff was trapped under debris that fell on him in a garage area of a house fire. He managed to crawl partially out of the
garage area and was then pulled clear by a civilian and another firefighter. Jeff was planning to marry fellow firefighter
Christy Turner, 21, whom he had grown up with and had joined the department with when they both turned 18.
Our brother Jeff is survived by his parents, Vaden and Linda, and his sister Alicia. A trust fund has been established and
