Our condolences to the Memory family and the Carrollton Volunteer Fire
Department of Carrollton, Virginia. FireFighter/EMT John 'JP' Memory II, 19,
a 3 year veteran of the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department died Saturday
September 16, 2006. JP was performing a motor vehicle extrication
exhibition at the Annual Patriot's Day in Franklin when he collapsed after
telling his crewmates he felt ill. He was rushed to Southampton Memorial
Hospital where he later died.
JP was a 2006 Smithfield High School Graduate and had planned to attend
Southside Regional Fire Academy in Portsmouth in his efforts to become a
career firefighter. In 2004 he was awarded the Chief's Award and in 2005
he was named Firefighter of the Year.
An autopsy revealed that JP's cause of death was cardiomyopathy caused
by a virus. It was not know how long he suffered the condition. A
visitation was held for JP on Tuesday September 19, 2006 at Colonial
Funeral Home in Smithfield. A funeral service for JP was held on Wednesday,
September 20, 2006 Colonial Funeral Home in Smithfield.
